Department of Central European Studies

About us

The Department of Central European Studies provides study programmes and carries out research on the languages, cultures and history of Central Europe.  The main focus is on the Visegrád Group region of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia, with natural extensions such as to Lusatia, Belarus or Galicia. Concerning the region’s languages, we offer the study of Hungarian, Polish, Roma and Slovak.

Our Department provides bachelor’s and master’s programmes in Central European Studies and Roma Studies. In cooperation with other departments, we provide doctoral programmes in Slavonic philology, Slavonic literatures, languages of Asian and African countries and histories and cultures of Asian and African countries. Our research activities lie in different areas of scholarship, in particular linguistics, literature, history and cultural anthropology. This variety reflects the interdisciplinary nature of our study programmes and the range of research interests of our academic staff.

The department is a young one at the Faculty of Arts. However, its individual components – Hungarian studies, Polish studies, Roma studies and Slovak studies – have had a longer tradition. Hungarian studies were established at the Prague university as early as 1853. A separate department of the Polish language and literature was founded in 1923.  The Cabinet of Slovak Studies came into existence in 1994. These three philologies merged within the then Institute of Slavonic and East European Studies in 2006 to form a separate Department of Central European Studies in 2011. The Roma Studies study programme was opened in 1991; 2000 saw Roma Studies Seminar established as a separate department of the Institute of South and Central Asia. The Roma Studies Seminar joined the department in 2015.
